The White Mountain brand has been around for over 150 years and is known for producing high-quality, traditional style ice cream makers that many Americans remember from their childhoods.
The distinctive feature of White Mountain ice cream makers is the use of an old style manual hand-crank mechanism to churn the mixture, which is simultaneously cooled by rock salt and ice packed around the canister.
These hand-cranked models are known for producing particularly creamy ice cream (due to the efficiency of the rock salt and ice method), and they offer a nostalgic and hands-on ice cream-making experience.
Churning ice cream by hand is hard work, though!
And while White Mountain originally gained popularity for its hand-cranked models, the brand has also introduced electric models in recent years for those who prefer a more convenient and automated approach to ice cream making.
Another distinctive feature of White Mountain ice cream makers is that they’re generally constructed from the kind of traditional materials that are no longer used in modern ice cream machines.
The outer bucket or tub of White Mountain ice cream makers is made of white pine wood, giving the machine a classic and nostalgic appearance, with the wood sealed or coated to protect it from moisture and wear.
And the inner canister, where the ice cream mixture is placed, is typically made of stainless steel, which is chosen for its durability and its ability to conduct and retain cold temperatures effectively.
But I think one of the biggest reasons for White Mountain ice cream maker's enduring popularity, is their huge capacities. They come in two sizes:
- 4-Quart Models: Make up to 4 quarts of ice cream and are suitable for smaller gatherings or families.
- 6-Quart Models: Make up to 6 quarts of ice cream, making them suitable for larger families or gatherings.
Compare that to the maximum 2 quarts you’ll get from both the ice cream makers with removable bowls that you pre freeze in your freezer, and the ones with built-in compressors.
No: if you’re making ice cream for a large group of people, then the White Mountain machines are going to win every time.
I don’t really cover them in this website as they’re not really suited to a domestic kitchen environment: they’re too big, too heavy, and they can be quite messy to use (with all the ice and rock salt).
However, they’re well-made and durable, have an appealing nostalgic aesthetic, the hand cranked models will work in a power cut, and they’re all capable of making really good ice cream.
So if you need lots and lots of ice cream at once for a party, BBQ or other social event they’re a great choice.
